Stiesdal Hydrogen partners with KK Wind Solutions

Stiesdal Hydrogen launched its green hydrogen electrolyzer plant in Glansager, Denmark, with KK Wind Solutions supplying 3 MW power and control systems.

In 2022, Stiesdal Hydrogen partnered with KK Wind Solutions to develop an end-to-end power supply solution for an alkaline electrolyzer. The first system was delivered to a Power-to-Gas plant in Glansager, southern Denmark. The plant, which is a part of a larger biogas facility, converts surplus CO2 from the biogas process into additional biogas, using green hydrogen from the electrolyzer and a biological process. To support efficient plant operations management, KK Wind Solutions delivered multiple 3 MW power supply systems, control system hardware, and integrated software applications to Stiesdal Hydrogen.

Navigating changing requirements
As the Power-to-X industry grows and matures, testing and commissioning of new plant designs demands adaptability and responsiveness from all involved stakeholders:

“Power-to-X standards are still evolving, and the regulatory landscape imposes stringent safety and compliance requirements. Our extensive experience in the wind industry, from its modest beginnings, makes us well-versed in navigating changes. This experience enables us to effectively transfer our expertise and swiftly adapt to changes in the Power-to-X industry, which is still establishing its foundation,” says Michael Ariel Nielsen, Vice President of Power-to-X at KK Wind Solutions.

The dynamic partnership between Stiesdal Hydrogen and KK Wind Solutions, characterised by open communication and shared problem-solving, enabled both teams to implement the changes and keep the project on schedule, as Michael Ariel Nielsen continues:

“When Stiesdal requested a major change in the grounding principle, we quickly adapted by redesigning power supplies and control panels, completing extensive rewiring and testing in just over a month. The team’s dedication was pivotal in resolving this intricate challenge. Close cooperation ensured the overall delivery schedule was only slightly extended.”

An open collaboration
The teams from both companies engaged in joint problem-solving, discussed issues candidly and sought advice from each other, minimising disruption to the project timeline.

“KK Wind Solutions’ quick adaptation and proactive approach have been crucial to ensuring traction and progress while overcoming last-minute changes. Despite the fast-changing development and design process, close cooperation ensured that the delivery schedule was aligned. This success is largely due to our collaborative approach, where KK Wind Solutions functions as an in-house team, leveraging their comprehensive understanding of each delivery’s interconnectedness,” says Thomas Holm Krogh, Senior Electrical Engineer at Stiesdal.

He continues:

“In our collaboration with KK Wind Solutions, they have consistently demonstrated agility and a willingness to go the extra mile in resolving complex issues. Their proactiveness and professionalism have made them a very strong and important partner.”

Utilising strong domain knowledge
Both Stiesdal Hydrogen and KK Wind Solutions have roots in the wind industry, a joint strength that has enhanced their close collaboration. Applying extensive domain knowledge and expertise from the wind industry makes Stiesdal Hydrogen and KK Wind Solutions strong partners for green hydrogen projects.

“At KK Wind Solutions, we have established processes, procedures, and existing supply chains within design and engineering, component sourcing, and logistics, enabling us to manage and execute projects efficiently. This allows us to accelerate scaling and add value to the next-generation green hydrogen plants that Stiesdal is spearheading,” says Michael Ariel Nielsen.

The strong customer-supplier relationship between the two companies has resulted in Stiesdal Hydrogen expanding the scope of deliveries during the project.

“We are pleased to have KK Wind Solutions as our partner. The synergies between our companies enabled us to overcome changes, ultimately delivering a fully operational plant in Glansager. Their exceptional collaboration and expertise have been invaluable, and we are pleased to expand their scope of work and further strengthen our partnership,” concludes Thomas Holm Krogh.

From delivery to ongoing optimisation
Following the implementation of the power supply systems, the Glansager site is now fully operational, producing green hydrogen for the Power-to-Gas process. Optimisation and fine-tuning are ongoing to enhance operational efficiency. The power supply system operates unmanned and is remotely controlled, and one unit produces a nominal 59 kg of green hydrogen per hour.

Looking ahead, Stiesdal Hydrogen and KK Wind Solutions will continue their collaboration, with additional power supply systems planned for delivery in the near future.
